Chrysalis
Chrysalis is an interdenominational, interracial, and international movement that begins with a three-day short course in Christianity for Grade 10 - 12's and post-school young people up to the age of 24.This movement grew out of The Walk to Emmaus movement and shares many common features with other "three-day" movements. All of these three-day movements were inspired by a lay renewal movement called Cursillo (cur-SEE-yoh) that began in Majorca, Spain in 1944.
The purpose of Chrysalis
The purpose of Chrysalis is to support the church's efforts to guide the spiritual formation of Christian young people. Chrysalis provides young people in the church with a course in the essentials of Christian faith and practice, a small-group structure for deepening discipleship, and a larger community experience for leadership development. As a result, young people grow spiritually and return home better equipped for living out their discipleship. "Next steps" small groups support the spiritual growth process. Regular gathering of Chrysalis youth and adults provide inspiration and motivation to become servant leaders and faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.
Chrysalis calls young people to receive the dynamic, life-changing friendship God offers through Jesus Christ, to become the unique and beautiful expressions of God's image they were created to be, and to grow together in the grace and love of Jesus Christ as servants of God in church and society. Chrysalis encourages young people to follow up their three-day experience by sharing the love they have received; acting as energetic and renewing influences in their churches, youth groups, and schools; and keeping the faith and fire alive through participation in spiritual support groups and occasional gathering of people who have shared the Chrysalis experience.
The butterfly, an ancient Christian symbol of Christ's death and resurrection, provides the central metaphor of the Chrysalis weekend. The butterfly's life cycle marvellously illustrates the experience of spiritual growth and transformation. The butterfly begins as a caterpillar. It then undergoes an amazing change as a chrysalis in a cocoon, dying to what it had been in order to become what it is meant to be. Similarly, the process of transformation in Christ involves dying with Christ to the old self through faith in God's accepting love, rising with Christ to a new self, motivated by hope in God's promise, and going forth with Christ to joyfully share the ministry of reconciliation and love with an alienated world.
